Rachel - McCurtain Gazette, Idabel , Oklahoma, issue of May 2, 1923. MRS. N. J. RACHEL, DIED SATURDAY AT HER HOME AT MAUD. H. A. Rachel and children, Misses Eunice and Annie Dean, and Horace Rachel, returned home Monday from Maud, Texas , where they went to attend the funeral of Mr. Rachel's mother, Mrs. N. J. Rachel, wife of Rev. Rachel, one of the best known ministers in Northeast Texas. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o' clock, and the ceremony was conducted by Rev. M. C. Cargill , pastor of the Rose Hill Baptist Church at Texarkana, Texas and interment was made in the old family burial ground at Center Ridge Cemetery. An interesting bit of history is connected with the Rachel family in that to this union there was born 11 children, nine of whom are still living and who were present at the funeral, W. J. Rachel, Maud, Texas; W. B. Rachel, Eyleau, Texas; C. K. Rachel, Eyleau, Texas; Mrs. Bob Minton, Maud , Texas; H. A. Rachel, Idabel; Mrs. Pearl Fomby, Maud, Texas; O. O. Rachel, Maud, Texas; Mrs. Vergie Fomby, Maud, Texas and Lester Rachel, Memphis, Tenn. Mrs. Rachel lived to see seventy two grandchildren, of whom fifty five are living, and thirty-two great grandchildren, of whom twenty-eight are still living. The Rachel family, comprised of 107 members at one time, lived so near to each other that they were all within an area of two square miles, including the old homestead at Maud. The family moved from Virginia to Indiana and then to Texas in 1881, where they have since made their home continuously. The family is one of the best known in Northeast Texas, and there are many friends who will recall many kindnesses at the hands of Mrs. N. J. Rachel. We sympathize with the surviving members of the family, and especially H. A. Rachel, of this city, in the loss of their mother. In Household #1634, Family #1634 in the 1850 Census of Washington County, Virginia, handwritten records shows child No. 5 as Mary A. Fleenor, not Henry A. Fleenor (which it should have been). Sarah Fleenor is listed as age 1, living in the household of her parents, Allen and Sarah Fleenor. ( See full Census under Allen Fleenor) Household #1888, Family #1828, page 622: Sarah Fleenor, age 11, living in the household of her parents, Allen and Sarah Fleenor. BIOGRAPHY: Sarah Ann Fleenor was born July 7, 1849 in Washington Co., VA to Allen and Sarah Hobbs Fleenor. She grew up near the present day community of Mendota. She had two sisters and four brothers. When she and Nathan J. Rachel married June 24, 1867 in Sullivan Co., TN, they rode one mule 18 miles to Bristol, TN to marry. They lived in Washington Co., VA about eight years and then they migrated to Little York, Washington Co., IN where they had three more children. In 1881 they moved to Corley, Bowie Co., TX where they built a log cabin for their home. Later they bought land near the community of Maud, and built a home place where they raised their children and lived the rest of their lives. They had four more children after they got to Texas. Sarah Ann was active in the first baptist church built in the area: Center Ridge Baptist, which her husband helped established. He was the first pastor. She worked hard raising eleven children, but she always had time to do her Christain duty. She died April 28, 1923 at age 74 and is buried in the Center Ridge Cemetery which her husband also helped established. She is buried along side her husband, Nathan J. Rachel, and her son , Edward Hugh Rachel, who died at age 5. |
